Abstract:

Mammography remians the procedure of choice in screening asymptomatic women for breast cancer. However, in patients with symptoms, other types of imaging play an important role in the detection of malignancies. The high cost and lack of availability of PET and MRI largely precludes the use in this patient population. TI-201 is nbt the imaging agent of choice because of its wash-out and redistribution mechanism in tumor cells; low photon energy also makes the agent less optimal for imaging. Tc-99m sestamibi scintimammography, on the other hand, has high sensitivity and improves the specfficity of conventional mammography forthe detection of breast cancer. In addition, the technique of prone breast imaging is superior to supine imaging bacause of excellent separation of deep breast structures from the myocardium in the left breast, excellent separation of the right breast from the liver and relaxation of the. pectoralis muscle, ultimately improving the resoltion of small deep-seated lesions. For these reasons, Tc-99m sestamibi scintimammography deserves further study as a diagnostic technique to potentially reduce the number of mammographically 'indicated' breast biopsies which yield negative results for cancer.

New method for breast cancer detection using TC-99m sestamibi scintimammography.

The combination of breast examination and radiographic mammography (XRMM) are the established methods for breast cancer detection. However, XRMM lacks sensitivity and specificity in women with dense breasts, leading to false positive findings in 80% and false negative findings in 10% to 15% of the cases. Tc-99m Sestamibi (MIBI) scintimammography (SMM) is a new breast-imaging technique. This stu...

Breast cancer: monitoring response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy using Tc-99m sestamibi scintimammography.

BACKGROUND Aim of the study was to assess the value of scintimammography using Tc-99m sestamibi in the evaluation of tumor response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy. MATERIAL ANS METHODS: Results were calculated for 9 patients undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Scintimammography using 740 MBq Tc-99m sestamibi was performed before, during and after chemotherapy, and sestamibi uptake was scored visu...

Comparison of Tc-99m maraciclatide and Tc-99m sestamibi molecular breast imaging in patients with suspected breast cancer

BACKGROUND Molecular breast imaging (MBI) performed with 99mTc sestamibi has been shown to be a valuable technique for the detection of breast cancer. Alternative radiotracers such as 99mTc maraciclatide may offer improved uptake in breast lesions. The purpose of this study was to compare relative performance of 99mTc sestamibi and 99mTc maraciclatide in patients with suspected breast cancer, u...

Molecular breast imaging: a new technique using technetium Tc 99m scintimammography to detect small tumors of the breast.

OBJECTIVE To determine the sensitivity of molecular breast imaging (MBI) to detect small cancers of the breast. PATIENTS AND METHODS A cadmium-zinc-telluride gamma camera with a field of view of 20 x 20 cm was used. The detector elements were 2.5 x 2.5 mm. The gamma camera was mounted on a modified mammographic gantry. Between November 2001 and March 2004, we performed MBI on patients who wer...

Half-time Tc-99m sestamibi imaging with a direct conversion molecular breast imaging system

BACKGROUND In an effort to reduce necessary acquisition time to perform molecular breast imaging (MBI), we compared diagnostic performance of MBI performed with standard 10-min-per-view acquisitions and half-time 5-min-per-view acquisitions, with and without wide beam reconstruction (WBR) processing. METHODS Eighty-two bilateral, two-view MBI studies were reviewed. Studies were performed with...
